Back in 2017, I had the hair of my dreams. I’d been dying my naturally ginger hair a more coppery orange, then I went to a salon to get a yellow balayage. However, one day I accidentally bought the wrong hair dye and ended up having to go bright red all over. I missed my yellow hair so much, but I didn’t want to get it back until I had a job that would accept crazy hair colours. This is where Hx Hair in Rugeley comes in.
Hx Hair
Hx Hair is a salon in Rugeley, Staffordshire specialising in vibrant colours. Rugeley is only a twenty minute drive from where I live. I had heard a lot about it before and I have followed the salon on Facebook for years. It is ran by Heffy Wheeler who has won quite a few awards over the years. She really knows what she is doing when it comes to brightly coloured hair! I also follow the salon on Instagram where they showcase some amazing before and after shots. I knew that they were the ones that I needed to go to to get my yellow hair back.
My hair before
Since getting rid of the red around a year ago, I’ve been dying my hair a coppery orange again. First of all, I’ll touch up my roots and lengths with a permanent colour every 6-8 weeks. Then when I wash my hair (which is once a week) I’ll mix a semi-permanent orange in with my conditioner. This means that there was quite a build up of dye over the lengths of my hair. I wasn’t sure how light it would be able to go.
Aside from the colour, my hair was in quite good condition. I had a few split ends and the cut was a bit wonky because I did it myself. It’s been well over a year since my last proper hair cut, so it’s quite surprising that my hair isn’t more damaged. Due to having coloured hair, I only wash it once a week now. I always use heat on it when it’s been washed. I’ll use my hairdryer to dry it and then I’ll use my GHD straighteners once it’s dry.

The transformation process
I had to go to the salon at least 48 hours before to have a skin test. This is where they place a bit of hair dye on your skin (usually behind your ear) to see if there are any allergic reactions. I went in for mine a week before and I had no reactions at all, so the dying could go ahead.
When I arrived at the salon, I was greeted by Amy who was going to be colouring my hair. She took me over to a chair and asked what sort of look I was hoping to achieve. I explained that I wanted it to be as yellow as possible. At Hx Hair, they use a lot of bright hair dyes which always get a great result. The two brands that they predominantly use are Osmo and Crazy Color.

Lifting the colour
The first step was to apply lift the colour out of my hair. To do this, Amy used the Crazy Color Back to Base remover. This is a powder product which, when mixed with developer lifts the colour off the hair and restores it back to its original or pre-lightened base colour. I have a lot of hair, so this took quite a while to apply. While Amy was applying the mixture, she kept telling me how well my hair was lifting. This was really reassuring to hear! Once it had all been applied, I had my hair wrapped in plastic to help the lifting process. The mixture was on my hair for around an hour to get the best results possible.
Applying the yellow
Once the remover had worked it’s magic, it was time to wash it off. While my hair was wet and still in the sink, Amy mixed together the hair colour. She chose to use Osmo Colour Psycho in Wild Yellow with a bit of Wild Orange mixed it to warm it up. The dye was left on my hair for around 20 minutes before it was washed out.
The results

Even when my hair was wet, I could see that the yellow had taken really well. It was a lot brighter than I was expecting it to be. I had anticipated needing another appointment to go lighter. Amy blow dried my hair, straightened it and gave me a little trim just to even out the wonky cut. She then asked what sort of finish I wanted. I went for straight, as although I love having my hair curled, I was just going back home for the afternoon. After a quick run through with the straighteners, my hair was complete!
Amy took me outside to get a few photos and so I could see how my hair looked under natural sunlight. I was so pleased with how it turned out. It was so vibrant!
If you are in South Staffordshire, then I definitely recommend you visit Hx Hair in Rugeley. The staff are all so knowledgeable and achieve such great results. I’m already planning my next visit, I think I want to go for something a bit different for the summer.
I received a discount in return for a blog post, however all thoughts and opinions are my own.
