Bus Trip Challenge – exploring Lincoln

Things to do in Lincoln - Lincoln Cathedral

With the cost of fuel going up all the time, it’s making days out more and more difficult. I used to be able to fill my car for around £40 and now it’s costing me £70! More people are trying to save their fuel, so it’s a great time to switch to public transport.  I was challenged by Stagecoach to have a day out using their journey planner. So, while I was in Lincoln recently, we decided to leave Leigh’s car behind and get the bus into town. There are so many great things to do in Lincoln that are accessible by bus.

The buses in Lincoln are really regular, there are a couple of different services that go from Leigh’s area to the city centre. We caught the number 9 bus on the quickest route which took around 30 minutes to get to Lincoln bus station. The journey into Lincoln cost us just £3.00 each. Paying for the bus is nothing compared to the cost of petrol and parking in a city centre! It also eliminates the stress of having to find somewhere to park in the city.

The first thing we did was treat ourselves to a milkshake from Eskimoo after getting off the bus at the bus station. Eskimoo has two branches in Lincoln, we visited the one on Guildhall Street which is a short walk up the high street. I went for the lemon meringue pie flavour which is my absolute favourite!

We then went on up to the cathedral. Lincoln’s cathedral is at the top of a hill which is aptly named Steep Hill. It’s a bit of a trek but once you get to the top, it’s all worth it! The cathedral has recently been renovated on the outside but it is finally free from scaffolding. This was the first time I’ve seen it without anything on it.

Our main plan in town was to visit the cat cafe. Coffee Cats Lincoln is one of my favourite cat cafes that I have been to and is one of my favourite things to do in Lincoln. They have a selection of rescue cats who are so well cared for. We have been a few times already and always love going back. Some cat cafes can make me feel a bit uncomfortable but at Coffee Cats you can tell that all of the cats are so loved and well cared for. We spent an hour there and had coffee and a cake whilst enjoying the company of some friendly felines. Entry to the cafe is £7 each for an hour and pre booking is a must as it does sell out. Food and drink is also really reasonably priced.

Steep Hill, Lincoln

As you might have guessed, one of my favourite things to do in Lincoln is eat. Our last treat of the day was a carvery. Can you believe that I had reached the grand old age of 32 and had never been to a carvery before? We went to the Toby Carvery which is just outside the city centre but still on a bus route, so we were able to get there easy enough.

Doing this challenge has made me realise that there are so many benefits to using public transport. The cost of fuel is obviously a big factor, but we also didn’t have to worry about finding somewhere to park and then paying an extortionate price for it. I’ll definitely be considering using the bus next time I want a day out!

This post is a collaboration with Stagecoach, but all thoughts and experiences are my own
