Lunch at The Fighting Cocks, Moseley

As I lived in Kings Heath for a while last year, I always used to go through Moseley on the bus when I was going to and from the city centre and I’ve visited a few of the pubs and restaurants in the area, however I’d never actually been to The Fighting Cocks. I didn’t realise that they actually have a pretty extensive food menu. So, I was happy to review a three course meal.

Fighting Cocks, Moseley

I invited fellow blogger, Heidi to come along with me. We got the bus to Moseley at around 1pm on a Saturday afternoon. We were expecting the place to be quite busy as it was the weekend. However, there were only two other tables occupied in the dining area. There was a small table reserved for us towards the back of the pub. We were near to an open fire which gave the place a really cosy feel.

I’d emailed the PR company and told them that Heidi is coeliac so would need a gluten free menu. I was impressed to find that when we sat down, there were already two different menus on the table. One normal one and one gluten free. There were a lot of choices for Heidi which was great. In fact, I chose to have a starter off the gluten free men

The food

For my starter, I chose to go for their version of the famous Canadian dish, poutine. Proper poutine uses cheese curds, so this was essentially just chips, cheddar cheese and gravy. However, I knew that as the menu did state that it came with cheddar cheese. There was a bit of an error when the starters were bought out. Heidi’s scallops were correct but they put a plate of fried squid down in front of me at first. So, I had to wait another five minutes for them to bring out the correct starter. By then, Heidi had already finished hers. Despite the mistake, my ‘poutine’ was delicious although it would have been better if it had been made with cheese curds.

Fighting Cocks moseley steak

For our mains, we both chose to have the 21 day aged sirloin steak with triple cooked chips and a Yorkshire pudding. The steak was absolutely delicious; Heidi’s was rare and mine was well done and we both felt like they were cooked to perfection. The chips were great too.

Fighting Cocks Moseley macarons

For dessert I opted for the trio of macarons with vanilla ice cream. I definitely made the right choice! The macarons were lemon, chocolate and pistachio flavour. They tasted just as good as the ones from Laduree and the ice cream was delicious! I’ve never tasted vanilla ice cream like it before, it was so thick and creamy; I could have eaten a whole bowl full of it!

Overall, I really enjoyed my meal at The Fighting Cocks, Moseley despite the error with the starters. I will definitely be back again in the future. Moseley is a great place to visit, so I recommend you take a trip out of the city centre.

Sounds like a good experience other than the mixup with the starters and the fact that they ran out of cocktail ingredients, which really is a strange thing to hear from a restaurant! It’s really great that they actually have a separate menu for gluten free items though. Your dessert looks absolutely delicious!
