The top Instagram spots in Copenhagen

Nyhavn and yellow Fjallraven Kanken

The capital of Denmark is one of those cities that is known for its beauty. If photography is your thing, then there are plenty of Instagram spots in Copenhagen. A quick Google image search brings up the colourful architecture of Nyhavn and the Little Mermaid statue amongst other beauty spots. If you’re looking for somewhere that’s picture perfect, then you will definitely want to get on a plane to Scandinavia. After spending the weekend there, here are my recommendations for the top Instagram spots in Copenhagen.

The best places to photograph in Copenhagen

Nyhavn canal, Copenhagen, Denmark

Nyhavn

Perhaps the most famous spot in Copenhagen is Nyhavn. A 17th century waterfront, once the home to sailors, prostitutes and Danish Author Hans Christian Anderson, Nyhavn is famous for its row of colourful buildings. These days the buildings contain restaurants, cafés, bars and even a Hans Christian Anderson themed souvenir shop. If you want to get yourself a shot of the famous colourful buildings, then it’s best to go over one of the bridges to the other side of the canal.

If it’s warm enough, grab a drink in one of the cafés and sit outside where you can get some great shots of the passing boats.

The Little Mermaid Statue, Copenhagen, Denmark

The Little Mermaid Statue

The second most famous spot in Copenhagen is just a short walk out of the city. The statue is a bronze statue depicting a mermaid turning into a human by Edvard Eriksen. It has been a part of Copenhagen since 1913, so she celebrated her 100th birthday in 2013. No matter what time of day you go, there will always be a crowd of people clamouring to get a photo of her.

We walked over on our first day, it was around a twenty minute walk. The route is quite scenic and there’s a lot to take in along the way. We also saw her from a boat tour which took us right behind her.

The Botanical Garden

Copenhagen Botanical Garden covers an area of ten hectares and was designed for peace, tranquility and contemplation. There’s no cost to enter the grounds, however you do have to pay to go inside the Butterfly House and the glass houses. If you do choose to enter the glass houses, then you’ll find this spiral staircase which is perfect for posing on. There’s also plenty of amazing plants which makes this one of the best Instagram spots in Copenhagen.

Inside Rosenborg Castle, Copenhagen, Denmark

Rosenborg Castle

Rosenborg Castle is somewhere you must visit if you’re into interiors and architecture; it’s stunning both inside and out. Once used as a summer home for the Danish Royal family, you’re now able to visit the castle and explore each of the rooms. If you don’t want to pay to go inside the castle, you can still explore the grounds and get photos of the beautiful rose gardens.

Mural in Freetown Christiania, Copenhagen, Denmark

Freetown Christiania

Perhaps the most colourful place in Denmark, Christiania is well worth a visit. You must remember to be respectful in this so called freetown as it is home to around 1,000 people. There’s plenty of murals, street art and colourful buildings for you to admire and photograph. Just be aware that you’re not allowed to take any photos down “Pusher Street” where cannabis is openly sold. You also need to ensure that you are respectful towards the residents who don’t want the tourists taking over their community.

Rundetaarn aka The Round Tower

Rundetaarn in the heart of Copenhagen’s city centre is the oldest functioning observatory in Europe. For a small cost you can walk up to the top of the tower which is 36 meters tall and offers a 360 degree view over the capital city.

The walk up to the top of the tower has plenty of photo opportunities, but the real treat is when you reach the roof. From here, you can see right across to the Øresund Bridge which connects Denmark to Sweden. You can see the stunning church towers and pretty red roof tops.
