Active Holiday Destinations around the Mediterranean

For a certain kind of holidaymaker, a break that combines nature with physical activity is ideal. Build your itinerary around movement, and make sure that your chosen destination provides plenty of opportunities for exertion, and you’ll stand a much better chance of enjoying yourself.

Hiking and trekking hotspots

There are a number of perfect island destinations for hikers. Among the best of these are Mallorca and Crete, which both offer well-developed coastal paths, and a good mix of mountainous trails. In mainland Italy, there’s the Blue Trail of cliffside paths that spans the famous Cinque Terre.

If you’re going to enjoy your time away, you’ll need to think about your level of fitness, and ensure that your chosen trails are going to be passable. Seasonal snow and rain might get in your way, if you allow it to do so. Make sure that you’re aware of the conditions you face, and that you plan accordingly.

Watersports and coastal adventures

There are countless different activities available on the water. You might try your hand at sailing, paddleboarding, snorkelling or surfing, depending on the local environment. Zakynthos, in Greece, and Tarifa, in Spain, might appeal.

Your preferences when it comes to watersports should dictate the time you visit, and the location, too. Snorkelling tends to be much more rewarding when the water is balmy, and there’s a rich and vibrant undersea environment to explore.

Multi-activity destinations for variety

It might be that you’re not entirely sure what you’d like to do. In other cases, you might prefer to keep things deliberately varied. In either case, a mix of activities is appropriate. Certain destinations will allow you to experience swimming, cycling, hiking, and non-active things like culture and history, within a single trip. This is where Turkey holidays, and the famous Lycian coast, are particularly worth considering.

Cycling-friendly destinations

Europe has had a rich and mature relationship with cycling for generations. There are countless trails, criss-crossing the mainland, and many of them run alongside the coast of the Mediterranean.During the early season, before the hot weather really descends, professional cyclists often head to Spain. But there are countless other high-quality destinations to consider, too. France is appealing, especially around Nice and Marseille. In the former, there are plenty of great places to rent a bike. You can even earn a badge by climbing the Col de Turini in three different ways.
