Things to consider before planning your holiday proposal

Destination proposals are one of the most romantic ways to pop the question, but proper planning is crucial to make sure it goes smoothly. Here are four things to consider before you start planning your holiday proposal.

1. The significance of the destination

If you’re yet to choose a destination for your proposal, think about places that have some kind of significance in your lives. Is there somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit together, or does your partner have a bucket list destination? Is there a place you’ve visited in the past that feels special?

If nothing springs to mind, consider a destination renowned for its romance. For example, the likes of Paris and Venice are iconic cities of love. Beach destinations like the Maldives and Bali are timeless proposal destinations that feel like paradise. Copenhagen is a romantic spot for LGBTQ couples because Denmark was the first country in the world to permit same-sex marriage.

2. The setting of the proposal itself

Once you’ve selected a destination, consider the setting of the proposal itself. It doesn’t necessarily have to be beautiful as long as it’s meaningful, but a gorgeous backdrop will certainly add to the romantic atmosphere. What suits you as a couple? If you’re an outdoorsy pair, the peak of a mountaintop is the perfect proposal spot. If you value privacy, it might be better to scope out a secluded beach so that it’s just the two of you. If you’re thinking of an iconic location, such as in front of the Eiffel Tower, keep in mind that you’ll likely be surrounded by people. There could even be other couples popping the question; one in 679 proposals take place in front of the Eiffel Tower.

3. Transporting the ring

One of the most nerve-wracking things about proposing on holiday is making sure the ring gets there safely and without your partner’s knowledge. The average cost of an engagement ring is £2,000, so it’s important to protect your investment. Make sure the insurance policy that covers the ring also covers overseas travel. Always keep the ring on you rather than putting it in your suitcase. If you’ll be flying, keep the ring in its box and put it in your carry-on bag when you go through security. Although you might be tempted to wrap the ring box up in extra layers to hide it, this will make it hard for security to identify it in the X-ray machine and could increase the risk of your bag being searched.

4. The post-proposal celebration

The work isn’t over once you’ve popped the question! The occasion warrants a celebration. It could be dinner reservations, a bottle of champagne waiting for you at the hotel, or a few drinks in a cocktail bar. You should also think about timing here. If you wait until the very end of your holiday to propose, you might miss out on that jubilant feeling. Instead, plan to propose during the first few days of the trip so that the rest of your holiday feels like a celebration. Plus, you’ll be able to relax without the stress of keeping the ring and your plans a secret.

Tailor your proposal to your relationship

Every couple is totally unique and every engagement should be the same. As long as you tailor your holiday proposal to the two of you, it’s sure to go down without a hitch.
