Kids and Cats: How to Ensure a Happy Co-Existence

Having both kids and cats in your home can lead to a loving and enriching environment for all. However, it does require some effort and planning to ensure a harmonious co-existence between children and felines. With some preparation and ongoing management, kids and cats can become the best of friends.

Choosing the Right Cat

When bringing a cat into a home with children, carefully consider the cat’s temperament and energy level. Shy or skittish cats may become overwhelmed by rambunctious kids. On the other hand, kittens and high energy cats will better match a child’s activity level for playtime. If you will be adopting from a rescue centre, ask the staff to help match you with a cat that enjoys being around children. Most rescue centres will not rehome a kitten with young children.

Introducing Children and Cats

Take things slowly when first introducing a cat to kids. Keep the cat in a separate room at first so it can adjust to your home’s sights and sounds. Next, allow supervised interactions where the child pets the cat gently for short periods. Provide lots of positive reinforcement so the cat forms positive associations. Quick meetings prevent overstimulation for either side. As the cat becomes more comfortable, lengthen the interactions.

Creating a Child-Friendly Home

Ensure your home setup allows places where your cat can escape from child chaos. Provide high perches, cat trees, and cosy boxes for hiding. Show children how to move calmly and quietly around the cat’s safe zones. Keep the cat’s food, water and litter box far from noise and foot traffic. Use baby gates if needed to allow the cat access to quiet areas.

Teaching Gentle Handling

Children must learn proper petting and handling of cats to avoid injury or trauma. Show them how to let the cat sniff their hand first, then pet gently starting under the chin rather than on top of the head. Demonstrate supporting the cat’s body when picking it up and avoiding grabbing its tail. Reward gentle behaviour with praise and treats for the cat and child.

Playtime Guidance

Provide appropriate toys that allow interactive play between cats and kids. Teach children to dangle toys and wands for the cat to chase, rather than grabbing at the cat or its tail. Supervise play sessions so things don’t get too rough. Encourage gentle games like hide and seek by tossing treats for the cat to find.

Setting Ground Rules

Establish age-appropriate house rules regarding your cat to help protect all. For example, young children should not pick up cats or bother them when they are sleeping or eating. Older kids may help with cat care like feeding when supervised. Make clear off-limit areas and actions. Remind them cats don’t understand punishment. Reward rule-following with cat interactions.

If you are fostering children with a foster family agency, be sure to check whether the children have allergies to cat hair.

Kids and cats can build wonderful relationships, bringing joy and companionship to a household. But having both requires extra effort to allow positive interactions. Following the guidance around introduction, environment, play and ground rules will help ensure a safe and happy co-existence. With proper adult supervision, the bonds between children and cats can provide lifelong benefits to all.
