What is dysphagia?

Swallowing is something most of us do without thinking, but for some, it becomes a challenge. Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, can make everyday activities like eating and drinking feel overwhelming.

While it may sound like a simple issue, dysphagia can affect a person’s nutrition, health, and even their quality of life. Understanding how it works and how to manage it can make a significant difference.

What does dysphagia mean?

Dysphagia refers to difficulty swallowing, whether it’s solid food, liquids or even saliva. It may feel like food is stuck in your throat or chest, or that it’s hard to start the swallowing process.

This condition can cause much discomfort, leading to choking or aspiration (food or liquid entering the airway), both of which pose serious risks. People with dysphagia often find it difficult to coordinate their swallowing muscles, which can lead to incomplete or delayed swallowing.

Why does it happen?

There are a variety of reasons why dysphagia can occur. It can be caused by issues with the muscles that control swallowing or problems in the nerves that help send signals for swallowing. For example, neurological conditions like strokes, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis are often linked with this.

Other causes include head and neck cancers, oesophageal issues, and even ageing, which can weaken the muscles involved in swallowing. In some cases, medication side effects or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can also contribute to swallowing difficulties.

How does it change eating habits?

When swallowing becomes harder, it affects how someone eats and drinks. People with dysphagia might avoid certain foods or drinks because they know they’ll be difficult to swallow. Mealtimes can become stressful, with a focus on chewing more slowly, cutting food into smaller pieces, or drinking more slowly.

Sometimes, individuals may even stop eating altogether if swallowing feels unsafe, leading to poor nutrition or weight loss. This can affect overall health, as a lack of essential nutrients can further weaken the body. People with dysphagia may also use strategies like sitting upright while eating or swallowing multiple times to clear the throat.

What are some safe food options?

Choosing the right foods can make a world of difference for someone with dysphagia. Soft foods that are easy to chew and swallow, such as mashed potatoes or scrambled eggs, tend to be safer choices. Another option is puréed meals, which involve blending food to a smooth consistency that’s easier to swallow. These can include puréed vegetables, meats or even fruits.

You should avoid dry, hard or sticky foods that could get stuck. Liquid consistency is important too; thickened liquids are often slower-moving and easier to manage, reducing the risk of choking. Working with a speech therapist or a dietitian can help determine the best food choices and portion sizes based on individual needs.
