Simple Ways to Quickly Make a House Feel Like a Home

Research has found that the average Briton moves home every 22.7 years, or around 3-4 times during their lifetimes. So, having the ability to quickly create a sense of belonging is a necessity. Moving into a new property is both exciting and challenging. Maybe you’ve just received the keys to a stylish new build home or purchased a period property;that initial feeling of unfamiliarity is universal.

1. Incorporate personal memories

Nothing makes a space feel more personal than displaying items that tell your story. So, surrounding ourselves with meaningful objects increases our emotional attachment to our living environment. For this, you can consider creating a gallery wall of family photographs, displaying travel souvenirs, or finding a special place for family heirlooms. All of these items can be your daily reminders of cherished moments and loved ones, which instantly adds character and warmth.

2. Introduce soft furnishings

One of the quickest ways to transform the feel of a space is through textiles. Adding soft furnishings can increase perceived comfort in a room almost immediately. Cushions, throws, and rugs in your preferred colours and textures make a significant difference without the need for permanent changes. These elements provide physical comfort and allow you to experiment with patterns and hues that reflect your personal style.

3. Use lighting to create ambiance

Lighting affects both the functionality and mood of your home. The right lighting scheme can make rooms feel larger, cosier, or more energising, depending on your needs. You can move beyond standard overhead lighting by incorporating a mix of floor lamps, table lamps, and candles. Research done by the Energy Saving Trust states that lighting accounts for approximately 15 per cent of a typical UK household’s electricity bill, so it’s important that you make lighting choices that work aesthetically and economically.

4. Add greenery with houseplants

Plants, besides adding aesthetic value, also improve well-being. If you’re new to plant care, choose low-maintenance varieties such as snake plants, pothos, or ZZ plants, and even artificial plants can add a refreshing touch of nature if maintenance is a concern.

5. Incorporate scent

Our sense of smell has powerful associations with comfort and memory. A signature home fragrance can become part of your home’s identity and trigger feelings of relaxation upon entering. Here, you can consider reed diffusers, essential oil diffusers, or scented candles in fragrances that resonate with you.

6. Display books and personal collections

Showcasing your favourite books, art pieces, or collections adds personality to your home and is a conversation starter. These displays tell visitors about your interests and passions without saying a single word. Arrange them thoughtfully on shelves, coffee tables, or dedicated display areas to create visual interest throughout your living space.

7. Apply a fresh coat of paint

Painting walls in colours that have an effect on you can change the feel of a room. Many studies point out specific colours, such as blue, which promotes tranquillity, or yellow, which energises. Even painting a single accent wall can change a space with minimal investment of time and money.

8. Invest in quality bedding

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary. Investing in comfortable, high-quality bedding can increase your sleep experience and contribute to the overall cosiness of your home. Consider this a priority investment since we spend approximately a third of our lives sleeping, which makes comfortable bedding one of the most impactful home improvements you can make.

9. Create functional spaces

Homes work best when they’re designed around how you actually live. Designating areas for specific activities—a reading nook, a hobby corner, or a dedicated workspace can make daily life more enjoyable and efficient.

10. Incorporate textures and layers

Layering different textures through textiles, furniture, and décor adds depth and interest to your rooms. Mix materials like wood, glass, and fabric to create a balanced and inviting environment. This approach creates visual richness and tactile comfort that makes spaces feel thoughtfully designed rather than simply furnished.

Making a house feel like home is about creating an environment that reflects your personality, supports your lifestyle, and evokes positive emotions. When you incorporate these simple strategies, you can quickly change even the newest property into a place that really feels like yours.
