Best Places to Visit in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is one of the most visited countries in Central America and despite its small size, it has a lot to offer, from tropical beaches and rich culture to stunning scenery and awe-inspiring wildlife.

Home to over 5% of the world’s biodiversity, Costa Rica is also one of the world’s most biodiverse countries boasting over half a million species. Costa Rica holidays are perfect for those who love spending time in and exploring nature.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve

The Monteverde Cloud Forest (Reserva Biologica del Bosque Nuboso de Monteverde) is known as a cloud forest rather than a rainforest, due to its elevation at a whopping 1,440 metres above sea level!

The reserve is home to some incredibly rare plants and wildlife, including over 400 species of bird, 100 mammal species and 1,200 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Here you can experience the thrill of a skywalk across a series of linked suspension bridges through the treetops, allowing you to admire the tropical forest from a different perspective.

Arenal National Park

Dormant since 2010 and sitting at an elevation of 5,480 feet, Arenal is one of Costa Rica’s many volcanoes.

Though you’re unlikely to see it erupt, that doesn’t mean it isn’t well worth a trip. You’ll find loads to do in the Arenal National Park, including hiking, horse riding, caving and rafting.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for something a little more laid-back, there are hot springs, boat tours along the Peñas Blancas River and guided bird-watching tours to enjoy.

Playa Conchal

There are many beautiful beaches to explore in Costa Rica, with sand of all colours from white to black and even pink!

Playa Conchal is a beautiful example that’s well worth a visit. With soft, seashell sand and a gentle slope into beautiful turquoise waters, it’s ideal for sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling.

Rincón de la Vieja National Park

With its 34,000 acres of rugged terrain, Rincón de la Vieja National Park is perfect for hiking and mountain biking but if you prefer to take things at a slower pace, you won’t be disappointed. The park is home to 2 volcanoes, 32 rivers and streams, and a diverse array of flora and fauna. You can swim beneath waterfalls, take a dip in hot springs or enjoy a picnic in nature.

Manuel Antonio National Park

At just seven square miles, you’d be forgiven for missing the Manuel Antonio National Park off your list of must-see destinations in Costa Rica, but don’t! Much like the country itself, despite its relatively small size, the park really packs a punch.

A mesmerising mix of rainforest, beautiful beaches, and coral reefs, the park is home to a haven for wildlife such as capuchin monkeys, sloths and iguanas. You can explore the park independently or join one of its many guided tours that operate both day and night, allowing visitors to get up close to rare wildlife and experience the true wonders of this very special place.
