Whenever a new year rolls around it’s always the same; I make some sort of vow to get fit, take up running or join a gym but it never seems to actually happen. At the start of this year I actually bought some gym leggings and I went on a run/jog/pathetic fast walk around the country lanes just once but since then I haven’t made any conscious effort to exercise until I moved to Winchester.
Since September I’ve been doing a lot of walking; I walk down to uni twice a week and when I’m not at uni I’m either at work in town (which is 1.5 miles away) or I walk into town just to get out of the flat. I’m really feeling a lot more fit and have lost a couple of pounds, so in 2018 I would like to keep this up and try some different kinds of exercise.
I used to swim a lot when I was younger, I started when I was around 4 or 5 years old and I went to lessons up until I was a young teenager. Going swimming with friends after school was always great fun and then when I moved to uni I would go every couple of weeks and do a few laps of the pool. Right now, I haven’t been swimming properly (I’m not counting the five minute dip in the pool while wearing my bikini bottoms inside out when I was in Florida) for around six years and it’s something that I would love to get back into.
Swimming really is a great form of exercise as it works your whole body, you burn a lot of calories and it improves muscle definition. Swimming is also great at relieving stress and depression which I think is something I will be needing once I’m working on my dissertation. Luckily, the local leisure centre is only a 40 minute walk away on the other side of town, so I can definitely get down there and take advantage of the student discount. Once I’ve found out my timetable for Semester Two, I’ll be having a look at the leisure centre’s timetable and working out when I can fit in a swim or two.
I also need to get shopping because I don’t have anything to actually go swimming with, which is why I need to get everything from swimming costumes (I’ve been looking at Speedo swimwear) to goggles. I’d have to make sure I get myself a swimming cap because my hair leaks colour when it gets wet, which is embarrassing. I also find it a lot easier to swim with a nose clip on as then I don’t have to worry about water getting up my nose and ruining my pace.
Another great way to keep fit is by cycling, I need to get myself some cycling bargains online and get to it.
