The Stable is one of my favourite places to visit for lunch. They offer the best selection of pizzas using locally sourced produce. They’re also well known for their cider selections and you can book one of their Cider Tasting Experiences at just £15 per head. A couple of weeks ago, I was invited down to Southampton to try out cider tasting at The Stable for myself. Although I’ve lived down south for almost eleven months, I hadn’t managed to attend any of the Southampton Blogger events, so I was excited to meet everyone.
Southampton’s branch of The Stable is located on Above Bar Street. It’s around a ten minute walk from Southampton Central railway station and there’s also plenty of bus stops nearby. It’s also a short walk from the West Quay and Marlands shopping centres, which makes it an ideal place to stop off for some lunch mid shopping trip.
The decor is as I would have expected after also visiting the restaurants in Birmingham and Winchester. They have a very industrial theme with wooden benches, tall candles and some very instagrammable plants on display by the entrance.
Cider Tasting Experience
The cider tasting includes ten different ciders picked out by your cider master. I don’t know much about cider as I don’t usually drink it. Our cider master, Ellie was amazing. She knew everything about each cider and I felt like I learnt so much from her. No two ciders tasted or looked the same and I was really surprised by some of them. We were given small glasses of each one and were told the name, origin and percentage. We then had to taste each one and rate it out of 10 based on appearance, aroma and taste. Of the ten ciders that we tried, my favourite one was the sparkling option called Shaky Bridge. I found this was really easy to drink. I could definitely order a pint of it to enjoy with a pizza!
The Stable’s pizzas
We were each treated to a pizza off the menu to help soak up the cider. I decided to go for the Sotonian Scorcher “spicy pork marinated in Naga chilli harissa, field mushrooms, red onion and mozzarella with basil and fresh chilli” however, I switched the mushrooms and red onion for the garlic potatoes. I don’t know what it is about potato on a pizza, but it just works and it tastes amazing. There was the perfect amount of toppings on the pizza, not too much sauce and just enough cheese. The chillies weren’t too spicy but they gave it enough of a kick. Although we had also been provided with a charcuterie and cheese board and a selection of breads, I managed to eat all of my pizza.
Even though we were all pretty full after our pizzas, we still managed to have room for dessert. I’m sure I have two different stomachs – one for dessert and then another one for everything else. We decided to go for the brownies. As half of the group was vegan we had four regular brownies and four vegan brownies brought over to us. I had one of the regular brownies which was delicious. They were served warm with vanilla ice cream and again, I managed to eat it all.
I definitely recommend cider tasting at The Stable, Southampton if you fancy trying something different. They also now have an app which you can order from and save yourself 20%.
