When the new year rolls around, everyone is always talking about starting afresh. Everyone is making their new year resolutions and having spring cleans. I like to use the new year as an excuse to have a big clear out. I like to go through all of my makeup, throw away anything that is expired or doesn’t look right anymore and anything that I just don’t use. What a lot of people don’t realise is that makeup has expiry dates. You don’t want to be using a mascara that is over 6 months old, that is really bad for your eyes. I’m going to be doing my yearly clear out over the next week or so, so I have been looking for items to replace the manky ones that I will be throwing out.

Starting afresh with my makeup

Foundation

I’m starting with foundation which generally has a shelf life of around two years. I know that I have several bottles in my drawer that are older than that, so I will definitely need to get rid of them. I have two different foundations that I am wanting to try, both are from Notino. The first one is Dermacol Cover which is a very high coverage foundation. Dermacol is a Czech brand and I saw their store while I was in Prague a few weeks ago. I wish that I had gone in and swatched this now, so I would know what shade I am. However, there are enough swatches on the internet and I can probably guess which shade I am.

The second foundation that I want to try is the Revolution Conceal & Define. I have heard a lot of mixed reviews about this, but I really love the concealer so I would like to try the foundation too. This is said to be a medium to full coverage and comes in the same shade range as the concealers. I think that I would probably be the shade F2.

Eyes

Moving on to eyes.. as I said, mascaras only have a shelf life of 6 months. I am coming to the end of my current mascara, so I need to choose a new one. I am not sure which one I am going to go for but I am fond of the L’Oreal ones. One thing that I really need to replace is my eyelash curlers. Mine are a cheap £1 pair from Primark. I’ve had them for ages and they are starting to look really grotty. I have found this pair from Tweezerman and I am hoping that they will be good.

I have so many eyeshadows in palettes and as singles. I really do need to go through them and throw some away. I tend to stick to warmer tones on my eyes, so this MAC eye shadow in the shade Rule would be perfect to me. It looks like the type of shade that you can just stick all over the eyelid and blend out for a simple look.

Powders

I don’t really need to worry about setting powders expiring as I tend to go through them so quickly. I am about to finish the one that I am currently using so it is time for a new one. The powder that I am going to replace that with is the Rimmel Insta Fix & Matte powder. I have tried this before and I really liked it. It gives a great flawless finish and helps my makeup to last all day.

Finally, onto highlighters. I must have more highlighters than any other products that I own. I have a few highlighter palettes that have definitely seen better days. Some of them are about 4 years old and are really gross now. I’m going to get rid of them and have decided to try a loose powder highlighter. The Revolution Pearl Lights loose highlighter in the shade Peach Champagne has had great reviews. It also looks like the perfect shade for me, to give me that glowy finish.

So need to try a setting powder as I haven’t used them before! Love that you got me hooked on highlighters though!

I just use a translucent powder rather than a setting one, I think I need to give a setting one a go though as my makeup just seems to slide at about 4pm when I’m at work!
