Sleep is an essential tool to help us function day-to-day and for our health. Getting a good night’s sleep can improve our memory, creativity and learning; it’s especially important for children, as the growth hormone is only released during sleep. However, getting enough sleep isn’t as easy as it sounds, and many of us suffer from poor sleep; either not being able to fall asleep, or waking up through the night and tossing and turning for hours. Of course, many of us are disturbed by our partner’s snoring too.

There are a lot of good habits you can practice to help you get into a good sleep routine, but sometimes it’s just not enough. If you have a particularly stressful job, or you work shifts, sleep doesn’t always come so easy. Melatonin

Your body makes melatonin naturally, and it a hormone that signals your brain it’s time to go to sleep. This particular hormone has somewhat of a cycle, and its production and release is influenced by the time of day. Your melatonin levels will naturally rise in the evening as you gear up to go to sleep, while they will fall in the morning.

The cycle of melatonin production and release can be interrupted by the likes of jet lag, so taking melatonin supplements is a popular way of helping you get to sleep. For those working shifts at odd hours, melatonin can help you to sleep through the day if needs be.

Valerian root

Valerian is a herb, native to the continents of Asia and Europe. Valerian root is a popular herbal supplement to treat sleep problems including anxiety and insomnia. You can take valerian as a tea or in supplement pills. Valerian root is a traditional product and studies have shown it reduces the time it takes to fall asleep.

Taking valerian root may also improve the quality of your sleep, meaning you don’t wake up feeling groggy or unrested.

Magnesium

Magnesium is a mineral and is used throughout processes in the human body. It’s important for brain function, but more importantly it can have a relaxing effect on your mind and body. Magnesium plays a part in regulating the production of melatonin.

Studies have proved that insufficient levels of magnesium can be linked to trouble sleeping, and taking magnesium supplements can help both the quality and quantity of your sleep.

Lavender

Lavender has a beautiful fragrance that is often thought to have a soothing effect. The popular purple flowers can help you sleep because of their smell. Studies have shown that using lavender oil before sleep can help, particularly for those who suffer from mild insomnia.

There are no side effects from using lavender, making lavender aromatherapy a popular solution.

Tryptophan

Tryptophan is an amino acid that is used by your body to create a B vitamin called niacin. Niacin helps to create serotonin which is associated with your melatonin levels.

You can up your levels of tryptophan naturally by eating food rich in the amino acid. This includes turkey, cheese, nuts, eggs and milk.

    My favourite sleep aid is cherries. Cherries are literally little bags of melatonin so they make a perfect treat for after dinner. I also sometimes make a smoothie with oat milk, cherries, almond butter and half a banana blended with some ice and it’s the ultimate evening snack 🙂
